Some fish need no introduction, and the Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) certainly falls into this category. With their eye-catching, blue, white, and neon red stripes running along their bodies, they are hard not to pay attention to! Growing no larger than 2 inches, these beauties are a great candidate for a smaller tank (we recommend 10 gallons as a minimum).

These non-aggressive fish are a very popular addition to a community aquarium. Alternatively, a large school of them swimming as a unit makes them a great choice for a centerpiece fish. They look exceptionally brilliant in a densely planted tank.

These fish can be sensitive to changes in water parameters; as such, special attention should be taken when acclimating these fish to ensure survival and longevity. Similarly, proper water parameters should be maintained consistently in their home to avoid illness and death. As our fish are tank-bred, their ability to acclimate to waters here in the States will be superior to those that are wild-caught. Their natural habitat consists of soft, acidic, tannin-rich waters with leaf litter

They occupy the upper and middle levels of the aquarium, seldom reaching the bottom of the tank. Being a schooling species, they should be kept in a school of at least 6 fish at the very minimum so that they will display their best colors and behaviors. If kept in too small a number, they will be shy and hide in the tank. As mentioned above, plants will help with shyness by offering a place for solitude should your tetra need some respite. Given their smaller size and mouths, they are safe to keep with smaller invertebrates such asNeocaridinia, though some babies may end up on the dinner menu!

The Neon Tetra is not a picky eater and will happily accept dried prepared flakes, granules, and other similar products. Of course, for maximum color display, freeze-dried, frozen, and live foods will offer the best nutritional value.

The ordering experience was excellent, but two days after arrival, I noticed that two of the neon tetras had a cottonmouth infection. I'm on the 5th (and last) day of treatment with SMZ/TMP, and it's still not cleared, so it may be fungal. I'll try that treatment next. Still, they all arrived in good shape and otherwise seem to be healthy. I had neons in my youth, and they were very hardy, but I've discovered that they are now much less so with the subsequent generations of tank breeding. Others recommend Green Tetras, Black Tetras, or Ember Tetras as more hardy.
Another thing to note is that since Shrimpy Business only ships 3 days a week, they batch print their shipping labels. I have an account with UPS, so this triggered UPS to send me a delivery estimate, which wasn't correct. So, wait for the email from Shrimpy Business to establish actual delivery. I will continue to use and recommend Shrimpy Business, but I couldn't recommend their neon tetras (or anyone's, apparently).
