Bring shifting color and constant movement to your freshwater aquarium with the Rainbow Stiphodon Goby (Stiphodon ornatus). This peaceful dwarf goby is known for its fascinating rock-climbing behavior, active grazing, and dramatic differences between males and females.

Females typically display an elegant cream-colored body with dark horizontal striping. Mature males are the showstoppers, developing metallic shades of electric blue, emerald green, burnished gold, and red-orange depending on their mood, environment, and lighting.

Native to western Sumatra, Indonesia, the Rainbow Stiphodon Goby comes from rocky freshwater streams and is well adapted to life in moving water. Its fused pelvic fins form a strong disc that allows it to grip rocks and other surfaces while grazing and exploring.

🐟 About This Fish

The Rainbow Stiphodon Goby is a peaceful, active bottom-dweller with a big personality for its small size. It spends much of the day perching on rocks, climbing across hardscape, and grazing on algae and biofilm.

These gobies are especially striking when kept in a mature aquarium that allows males to display their full coloration. They can be kept individually, in pairs, or in groups when enough space and grazing surfaces are provided.

🌊 Aquarium Care

This species does best in a mature, stable aquarium with clean, highly oxygenated water and moderate to strong current.

A newer aquarium without established algae or biofilm may not provide enough natural grazing material. Water quality should remain consistent, and excess waste or stagnant areas should be avoided.

A secure aquarium lid is strongly recommended. Like many gobies, Rainbow Stiphodons may climb glass or jump through small openings.

🪨 Tank Setup

Provide plenty of smooth rocks, rounded stones, driftwood, and open areas where the gobies can perch and graze. A longer aquarium footprint is more useful than additional height because these fish spend most of their time near the bottom.

Allow some algae and biofilm to grow naturally across the hardscape. Hardy plants such as Anubias, Java fern, and Bucephalandra work well and will not be damaged by these gobies.

When keeping multiple males, provide additional space and rockwork to create separate territories and break up sightlines.

🍽️ Diet

Rainbow Stiphodon Gobies are active grazers and should have regular access to natural algae and biofilm.

Our fish are currently fed a combination of:

• Live baby brine shrimp
• Frozen daphnia
• High-quality flake food

Algae-based foods, spirulina products, and quality sinking foods may also be offered. Live or frozen meaty foods should be treated as supplements rather than the entire diet.

🤝 Tankmates

This goby is generally peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive community fish that appreciate similar water conditions.

Suitable tankmates may include small rasboras, danios, peaceful tetras, hillstream loaches, and other calm goby species.

Use caution with very small shrimp and newly hatched shrimplets, which may occasionally be eaten. Larger invertebrates such as Amano shrimp and Vampire shrimp are generally better suited because of their size.

Males may become territorial with one another, particularly when displaying or competing for preferred grazing areas. Provide extra space and multiple rock piles when keeping a group.

🐣 Breeding Notes

Breeding Rainbow Stiphodon Gobies in captivity is extremely difficult.

Stiphodon gobies have an amphidromous life cycle. Adults spawn in freshwater, but the newly hatched larvae move downstream and develop in marine conditions before returning to freshwater as juveniles. Their tiny larvae and extended marine stage make successful captive rearing exceptionally challenging.

⚠️ Important Notes

This species requires a mature aquarium with strong oxygenation, consistent water quality, and established grazing surfaces. It should not be purchased as the sole solution for aquarium algae.

Very small shrimp and shrimplets may be eaten. Larger shrimp are generally safer, but no small invertebrate should be considered completely protected. A secure lid is also strongly recommended.
