The Blue Belly Goby (Lentipes ikeae) is a rare freshwater dwarf goby known for its vivid male coloration, active behavior, and ability to navigate rocky, fast-moving environments. Mature males can develop a brilliant blue belly, dark markings on the second dorsal fin, and a bright red band near the tail. Females are more understated but remain active and interesting additions to a specialty freshwater aquarium.

Native to Indonesia, the Blue Belly Goby occurs in small, rapid mountain streams with rocky bottoms and large boulders. It does best in a mature aquarium with excellent water quality, high oxygen levels, and consistent flow.

🐟 About This Fish

The Blue Belly Goby is a compact, active stream goby with striking differences between males and females. Mature males display the species’ signature blue belly, along with red and black accents that may become more intense depending on mood, environment, and lighting.

This species reaches approximately 1.5 to 2 inches and spends much of its time perching on rocks, exploring hardscape, and moving through the lower levels of the aquarium.

🌊 Aquarium Care

Blue Belly Gobies are manageable once established but should only be added to a mature, fully cycled aquarium. They require clean, oxygen-rich water and moderate to strong current that recreates their natural stream habitat.

Although they can acclimate to a range of water parameters, stability is more important than chasing an exact number. Avoid introducing them to new, unstable, low-flow, or poorly oxygenated tanks.

A secure aquarium lid is strongly recommended because small stream gobies may climb glass or escape through narrow openings.

🪨 Tank Setup

Provide smooth rocks, rounded stones, driftwood, caves, and open areas where the goby can perch and explore. Multiple rock piles and visual barriers are helpful when keeping more than one male.

A longer aquarium footprint is preferable to a tall aquarium because these fish spend most of their time near the bottom. Hardy plants such as Anubias, Java fern, and Bucephalandra work well and will not interfere with their natural behavior.

A 10-gallon aquarium may work for one fish or a compatible pair. A larger aquarium is recommended for groups or when keeping multiple males.

🍽️ Diet

Offer the Blue Belly Goby a varied diet of small, appropriately sized foods. Suitable options may include:

• Live baby brine shrimp
• Frozen daphnia
• Frozen bloodworms
• High-quality sinking micro pellets
• Finely crushed, high-quality flake food

A mature aquarium with natural biofilm and microorganisms provides additional grazing opportunities, but the fish should not be expected to survive on aquarium algae alone.

🤝 Tankmates

The Blue Belly Goby is best kept with small, peaceful fish that appreciate clean, oxygenated water and moderate to strong flow.

Suitable tankmates may include small rasboras, peaceful danios, hillstream loaches, Stiphodon gobies, and other calm community fish.

Use caution with dwarf shrimp and newly hatched shrimplets. Very small shrimp or other tiny invertebrates may be eaten if given the opportunity. Larger shrimp are generally safer, but no small invertebrate should be considered completely protected.

Provide additional rockwork and space when keeping multiple males so each fish can establish a preferred area.

🐣 Breeding Notes

The Blue Belly Goby is presumed to have an amphidromous life cycle, like other members of its subfamily. Adults live and spawn in freshwater, while the larvae develop downstream in marine or brackish conditions before returning to freshwater. This complex life cycle makes successful captive breeding and fry rearing extremely difficult.
