One of the most commonly kept nano fish in the hobby, the Ember Tetra offers a lot of beauty in a small package; its maximum size tops out around 0.8 inches. Its dazzling red and orange body, coupled with its easy-going nature, has led to its popularity. It is particularly beautiful in a well-planted aquarium, with its fiery colors offering a nice contrast whilst swimming in front of a background of green.
Originating from the Araguaia River basin in Brazil, its natural habitat is composed of acidic, tannin-rich, slower-moving waters. These fish are usually found schooling in groups, exploring the middle to top levels of the water column, at times venturing down to the lower levels to pick up any leftover food. In order for them to display their best schooling behavior, they should be kept in groups of at least 6. Given its amiable personality, it can be kept with a plethora of similarly sized, non-aggressive fish species such as other tetras, danios, and members of the rasboras family. As it is a smaller fish, it can be kept with Neocaridinia shrimp and other small invertebrates, though some babies may end up as dinner if the fish are hungry.
The Ember Tetra is easy to feed, and will readily accept high-quality flake food, pellets, and live, frozen, or freeze-dried organisms.
